White dune evening primrose rises among pink sand verbena as remnants of morning fog lift over the lower desert · Anza-Borrego Desert · California · 1998.

Pink sand verbena spreads across a small desert dune while a white dune evening primrose remains open in the cool early morning light. Above the flowers, remnants of the unusual morning fog continue to lift into the sky, creating layers of pink, white and muted desert atmosphere across the composition.

Field Notes

I was drawn to the symmetry of this scene. Pink sand verbena covered the small dune while remnants of the morning fog were still lifting into the sky. The white dune evening primrose blooms at night and remains open only for a short time into the morning, so the cool early light and lingering fog created a brief window to photograph it among the verbena.
