Field Notes

A view from the top of Gorman with moving cloud shadows and stunted wildflowers struggling to bloom, likely from a shortened rainy season and possibly in combination with the removal of grazing herbivores.

This location was once a regularly occurring wildflower wonderland, but sadly it has not bloomed much since 2003.

It remains a recurring example of what can happen as the climate warms and land-use practices change.

The group of large boulders visible on the ridge provides a fixed landmark within the archive. The same boulders can be seen nine years earlier in the 2001 Fuji GX617 panorama Three Mountains in the Garden . Viewed together, the two photographs connect different positions, years and photographic formats within the same Gorman landscape, providing a visual reference point between the prolific bloom of 2001 and the far more subdued conditions photographed here in 2010.
