Big Blue with Rare White
An exceptionally dense spread of giant Bentham lupines fills the hillside, interrupted by the striking appearance of a single white lupine. Surrounded by an immense field of blue, the solitary white flower becomes an unexpected focal point within one of the most remarkable wildflower displays documented at Gorman.
This exceptionally dense spread of giant Bentham lupines held another rarity—a single white lupine rising alone among the blue.
The spring of 2003 was a once-in-a-lifetime bloom on the hills of Gorman. Longtime local residents referred to that extraordinary season as “the Big Blue,” a fitting name for hills covered in more blue—and more shades of blue—than anyone could remember seeing there. Residents described it as the most intense blue bloom in more than 75 years.
The added combination of orange and yellow blooming alongside the blue made the landscape truly amazing to the eyes and the heart.
